“May the Holy Cross be my light!
May the dragon never be my guide!”
Saint Benedict dedicated his life to the pursuit of God through prayer, discipline, and wisdom. He left as his legacy the Rule of Saint Benedict, which guides a balanced life between prayer and work, inspiring even today those who wish to live with faith, order, and purpose. Celebrated on July 11, his memory remains alive in the Church as an example of holiness and trust in God.
The St. Benedict Medal prominently features the powerful exorcistic formula beginning with “Vade retro Satana” (“Begone Satan!” or “Step back, Satan!”).
Full Inscription and Meaning:
Around the outer rim are the letters:
V R S N S M V — S M Q L I V B
These stand for the Latin prayer:
> Vade retro Satana!
> Nunquam suade mihi vana!
> Sunt mala quae libas.
> Ipse venena bibas!
English Translation:
- Begone Satan!
- Never tempt me with your vanities!
- What you offer me is evil.
- Drink the poison yourself!
This is a strong formula of exorcism and spiritual protection, dating back to at least the 15th century and strongly associated with the Benedictine tradition.
Other Elements on the Reverse Side
- Large letters on the cross itself:
- C S S M L (vertical bar) — Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux (“May the Holy Cross be my light”)
- N D S M D (horizontal bar) — Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux (“Let not the dragon be my guide/leader”)
- C S P B — Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (“The Cross of our Holy Father Benedict”) — usually at the four quadrants or arms of the cross.
- PAX (“Peace”) — at the very top, the motto of the Benedictine Order.
This inscription makes the medal one of the most potent sacramentals in the Church for protection against evil, temptation, and demonic influence. Many people pray the full “Vade retro Satana” prayer when holding or blessing the medal. It is especially powerful when combined with the Rosary, as in the St. Benedict Rosary.
Made of 8mm resin beads, with a varnish finish, metal and cord, in green, measuring approximately 39 cm in length. The medal measures 2.2 cm.
